Many thoughts come to mind when looking at a rainbow. Most people see a a beautiful streak of color painted across the sky. Some see a scientific refraction of white light as it is split into every color by ice particles in the air. Others still may see it a symbol of free love and a right to homosexuality. There are a few who see it as a fond memory of childhood fantasy. And some others see it as a reminder of God's promise to Noah.
However, when I see a rainbow, I see a one of a kind miracle displayed across the sky that God has put there just for me. God has a way of doing the unexpected at just the right time to make us smile. I was at the beach when I captured a stunning photo, and the thing that fascinated me most was that the rainbow touched the water. It wasn't like the partial rainbows that I had seen before with their edges faded or hidden behind trees and land. This one poured all of its colors into the ocean, making a distinct separation between what was above it and what was below.
It made me think of a barrier or a partition, separating one side from the other. God has a barrier put up around each of us to protect us from harm and to keep us safe. Psalm 91:4 says "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler." God is our Father and our protector. He surrounds us in layers of love and grace to block the attacks of the devil. Like the rainbow has layers of colors, God's barrier has layers of protection.
Starting with the innermost layer or the layer closest to us, the color purple or violet represents peace. Philippians 4:7 states, "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.". It is God's peace that will protect you from worry and fear when darkness seems to be closing in around you.
The next layer is the color blue which represents our faith, upon which we believe His promises. In Hebrews 13:5-6, He says "...for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.". Faith, though it's hard to see, will carry us through all fear and doubt we face because we are trusting that God will keep His word.
Next comes green, representing God's never-ending grace. "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." He says in II Corinthians 12:9. The grace of God is made perfect and strong in our greatest weakness, so let the battles rage. God's grace is more than enough to fill in the gap when we fall short.
Following green is the brightest color in the rainbow, yellow, which represents the light of God. Before Jesus came into the world, David wrote in Psalm 119:105 that the Word of God "...is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." God does not want us to walk in the dark, but has illuminated the path of righteousness to keep us safe from the unseen dangers of the world.
Next to last in our rainbow is orange, representing joy. After peace, faith, grace, and light comes unspeakable joy in knowing that, through Jesus Christ, the battle has already been won. In John 15:11, Jesus said "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full."
Finally, the outermost layer of every rainbow is red, which represents the blood of Jesus that covers everything. Revelations 12:11 states, "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony...". We can overcome any trial we may face through the precious blood of Jesus. Red is always the outside or top color of the rainbow. How fitting it is that with all the layers of God's protection, the one layer that was a physical part of Him, He put between us and the enemy!
God truly loves His children, and He uses the little things to show us just how much He really cares. So, the next time you get to witness a rainbow across the sky, what will you see?
